FAQ - About the brand

Where are the bags made?
All VON KAAP items are handmade in Cape Town. All items we need to produce the bags are locally sourced in and around Cape Town.
It takes about four days to make a bag. Excluding the tanning proces of the vegtan leather. The tanning proces is very labor intensive and takes up to about six weeks.
-
What are the bags made of?
All of our products are made of carefully selected vegtan leather. Vegtan refers to the tanning proces. The leather is soaked into baths with plants and barks. The natural tannins of the plans dyes the hides and give them the black or brown colour. This way of tanning is known to be one of the oldest ways to tan hides.
This tanning proces will take way longer than other industrial ways of tanning. Therefore the price is higher. It also makes the leather much more durable. We believe by using this leather we contribute to doing better and choosing for the longevity of our products.
Vegtan is not to be mistaken for vegan leather. As vegan leather is made of loads of chemicals and plastics. It’s not very durable and the proces of making vegan leather is environmentally more harmfull than tanning vegtan leather.

FAQ - about the bags
-
What are the dimentions of The Cape?
Bag: 22,5 x 18 x 4,5 cm
Cross body strap full length (adjustable : 130 cm)
Waist strap full length (adjustable: 115 cm)
The bag including straps weighs about 550 grams / 0,55 kg.
-
How can you wear it in 5 ways?
You can wear The Cape in five different styles.
With the cross body strap and the waist strap together. The safest way!
Only the cross body strap
Only the waist strap. We recommend to pull the strap trough hoops of your jeans/trousers.
No straps at all. Like a clutch.
Handbag: pull the cross body strap al the way up so it’s a short double strap. now you have a handbag.
-
How do I install the waist strap?
To install the waist strap correctly:
Take the thickest strap. The one with the hook on one side and a D-ring on the other side.
Grab the side with the hook
Turn your bag around and slide / pull the hook trough the leather rectangle patch on the back of the bag. You may need to use some force since the leather will be stiff because of newness.
now that the strap is pulled trough, you can adjust the strap to your style and comfort by sliding the the buckle more back- or forwards.
Click on this link to look at a picture that shows you how to install your waist belt.
-
What colours do you have and will you have in the future?
We manufacture The Cape in a black and dark brown colour. We are working on other colours but we’re testing and trying before it gets sold.
-
How can you close the bag?
The bag closes in two ways to make it as secure as possible.
Via a large zipper that is hidden under the flap of the bag
the flap closes automatically via two strong magnets. This way your bag never gasps open.
There is also a small cotton pocket on the inside of the bag that you can open and close via a small zipper (note the little table mountain detail on its puller;).
-
How do I take care of the bag?
We recommend to use a (eco friendly) non-coloured bees wax for your leather bag. This makes sure the leather does not dry out and keeps it soft and supple. It also protects your bag from outside influences like sun, rain or foggy weather conditions.
We recommend to use the bees wax once every 3 months. It will have some effect on the looks of your leather. But that will fade every time after a few times wearing.
